Coronavirus disease (Covid-19)

Covid-19, often known as the corona virus, has recently made news. The virus is rapidly spreading across Asia and into other regions of the world. You can lower your chance of contracting and transmitting the virus by taking basic precautions.

How terrible is this virus?

Colds, coughs, sore throats, and fevers are common signs of the virus, as are other respiratory disorders. For certain people, infection with this virus can be lethal. Pneumonia, loss of breath, and organ failure are all possible side effects. The condition can, however, be lethal in extremely rare circumstances. This viral infection puts older and previously unwell persons at a higher risk of getting very ill.

Should I wear a medical mask?

Medical masks help to prevent the transmission of infections like the coronavirus. Its use, however, is insufficient to prevent infection. The easiest approach to avoid getting the virus is to wash your hands frequently and avoid contact with a potentially affected individual.

Are children at risk?

This virus can infect people of any age group. One thing to keep in mind is that no deaths have been documented in children who have been infected with the corona virus. The virus has the potential to kill people, especially those who are already sick.

The virus, on the other hand, has an indirect impact on disadvantaged urban youngsters. School closures, which have recently been witnessed in Mongolia, are one of these repercussions.

"The coronavirus is spreading at an alarming rate, and it is critical to take all necessary precautions to prevent it. We don't yet know much about the virus's effects on children or the number of people who may be infected, but intensive monitoring and prevention appears to be the most important in this case. We don't have time."

                                              UNICEF Executive Director Henrietta Four

What is UNICEF doing in this case?

In late January, a UNICEF shipment arrived in Shanghai, China, carrying protective masks and suits for health professionals to help China limit the spread of the corona virus.

The six-metric-ton shipment will be delivered to Yuhan, China, via UNICEF's Global Supply Center in Copenhagen. In the next days, UNICEF will deploy more emergency supplies.

Can coronavirus be transmitted to pregnant women through their unborn child?

There is no indication that the virus can be passed from mother to kid during pregnancy at this time. Furthermore, there is no evidence to remark on the virus's potential impacts on the baby. The experiment is now ongoing.Pregnant women should take adequate precautions as soon as signs of fever, cough, or shortness of breath emerge and seek medical assistance as soon as possible.

I am concerned about harassment, discrimination and social stigma. What is the best way to express what is happening?

It is appropriate if you are concerned about the corona virus. Fear and social shame, on the other hand, exacerbate a terrible situation. For example, reports are flooding in from many parts of Asia that people infected with the virus are being tormented both mentally and physically. Emergency public health situations add to the stress of those who are affected. It's critical to be conscious of the problem and to be polite and helpful to one another. Language matters, and using language that reinforces prejudices might deter individuals from testing and taking the necessary precautions to safeguard themselves and their communities.
